The Christmas Bird Count (CBC), a long-standing program of the audubonsociety, invites you to partake in vital citizen science. By participating in the CBC, you’ll contribute to an invaluable annual snapshot of winter bird populations across the Catskills and beyond.
For 10 years I’ve been trying to capture black bears wallowing in wetlands on camera traps. I ended up with a lot of deer and a few bears doing other activities. Today I was surprised and pleased to get pics of bears using a small wallow in a small peat wetland in the high peaks. Bears utilize open water as wallowing tubs to escape insects and to cool off. They keep the water clear of Sphagnum moss carpets and in doing so, provide habitat for amphibians, aquatic insects, and hydrophytic plants. Although peat lands like this aren’t the only wetland type bears use to wallow, the soft, deep organic soil and high water table allow them to easily dig out their tubs. You can see that there are two bears that used the wallow. The bear captured at night appears to be a young bear, perhaps three years old. The other bear is a male, or boar, and is substantially larger. Boars can be distinguished by a light brown and broad muzzle. The males often get very large and their heads outsize their ears. You can see that on the last bear pic. Black bears, like grizzlies are also territorial, so it’s interesting to see a smaller bear attracted to a small wetland that is also visited by such a chonker boar. .
