Reuben “Rube” Cross wrote “Tying American Trout Lures” in 1936. Before this publication, there wasn’t a comprehensive collection of information on tying the American dry fly. It was a closely guarded secret by many fishermen, most not willing to teach another what they knew. Rube was no different, and even turned away Walt Dette when asked if he could show him his techniques.

The "Catskill," a century-old Rube Cross pattern with a generic name. Among other things, Cross was known for his meticulous tying. The fall colors with the wood duck wings did it for me.

This book was the first “tell all” and allowed others to finally learn the proper way to dress a fly. As to Cross’s reason for the change of heart, “Well, there aren’t very many people tying good flies-not near enough to go around-but there are a whole lot who would get a great deal more fun out of fishing if they used good flies. Maybe I can help a little by telling how I tie mine.”
Reading the original copies to me is the equivalent to listening to music on Spotify to listening to the original vinyl pressing. Of course you love the song no matter what, but to find and return to the source material and hear it the way everyone in that time heard it for the first time brings a certain magic. This magic rests in the pages of these books as well, and opening them and reading what was never read before by fishermen in that time period is an inspiration.
It reminds me of how lucky we all are that these legends made the decision to share this unique art with others.
