Reuben “Rube” Cross wrote “Tying American Trout Lures” in 1936. Before this publication, there wasn’t a comprehensive collection of information on tying the American dry fly. It was a closely guarded secret by many fishermen, most not willing to teach another what they knew. Rube was no different, and even turned away Walt Dette when asked if he could show him his techniques.

This book was the first “tell all” and allowed others to finally learn the proper way to dress a fly. As to Cross’s reason for the change of heart, “Well, there aren’t very many people tying good flies-not near enough to go around-but there are a whole lot who would get a great deal more fun out of fishing if they used good flies. Maybe I can help a little by telling how I tie mine.”
Reading the original copies to me is the equivalent to listening to music on Spotify to listening to the original vinyl pressing. Of course you love the song no matter what, but to find and return to the source material and hear it the way everyone in that time heard it for the first time brings a certain magic. This magic rests in the pages of these books as well, and opening them and reading what was never read before by fishermen in that time period is an inspiration.
It reminds me of how lucky we all are that these legends made the decision to share this unique art with others.

Here we have the Jock Scott. Good for eastern Brook and brown trout. Stitching together four colors of duck feathers was tedious! Body made with yellow floss, grizzly hackle, tail is pheasant head feather with a red tag. Finish with two peacocks on top.

Celebrating 95 years of detteflies, a shop that I hope to visit someday.

Established in 1928, Dette Flies is the oldest family run fly shop in the world.
When Dan Cahill wasn't fishing or tying flies he was a brakeman on the old Erie and Lackawana Railroad. One steamy, hot summer day in the Catskills, Dan was working a Lackawana freight north of Port Jervis. On board were can of big brood stock rainbow trout, presumably headed for the Caledonia fish hatchery in upstate New York. When his own train was blocked by a derailed work train, Cahill knew the trout would never make it in the mid-summer heat.
Taking action quickly, Dan talked his fellow crew members into helping him carry the heavy can of trout back to Calicoon Creek and dump them. It was almost a mile, but the big rainbows not only survived the ordeal, they flourished in the little Catskill stream, and that unscheduled stocking and their offspring eventually spread throughout the Delaware watershed.
Rainbows were later stocked in the Esopus and other Catskill streams of the Hudson River drainage. To this day their ancestors provide the finest rainbow trout fishing in the east. (Source: flyanglersonline.com)

Catskill Fly Patterns 3/3
Named after the “Father of American Dry Fly Fishing”, Theodore Gordon who originated the Catskill style of tying flies. The Catskill Fly patterns series would not be complete without this one.
Gordon lived near the Neversink River in New York’s Catskills, and learned about the English dry fly revolution from his friend Frederic Halford.
Gordon changed the appearance of the dry fly by tying flies with stiffer and more sparse hackle. This method was perfect for the fast American waters.

Even this is not a dry fly, the Gordon legacy lives on in the Quill Gordon wet.
The fly is dressed almost the way Ray wrote it in Trout. I tend to keep the thread color neutral when tying these Catskill patterns. UTC 70 denier Brown Gray suits them perfectly.

The hook is spritehooks Sprite S1175 Heavy Match Wet in size 12. Wood duck or Mandarin are difficult to find, so I used mallard in color Summer Yellow. I changed the tail to Mallard, which is one way of tying this fly. I just like the look of it, and you can’t go wrong with Wood duck, Mandarin or Summer Yellow mallard. The hackle is medium dunn hen.
It was hard to find the time for such a impegnative pattern, but in the end, i'm quite happy with it, unfortunately i don't have a white saddle, so i had to use a cape feather. I hope one day I can fish this fly in a Catskill river!
