Badger Spiders, #16. Spider, as in Skater or Variant, a now seldom used Catskill fly using a oversized hackles. Described by Roderick Haig-Brown (and Lee Wulff) as among the most useful of dry flies. Fun little ones to tie, can't wait to fish them.

Catskill Fly Patterns 2/3
Natural bugginess and dullness with a slight contrast of the orange floss make this the ultimate Catskill pattern.
It doesn’t imitate anything and in the same time it imitates everything, like all the good ones.
Palmered hackle is a common element of all the time proven effective flies. Think patterns like the Red Tag and The Zulu. And of course the notorious Woolly Worm.
I can see this fly being a one of those when nothing else is working- patterns, or an oversized Caddis imitation.
The fly is dressed the way Ray wrote it in Trout. I tend to keep the thread color neutral when tying these Catskill patterns. UTC 70 denier Brown Gray suits them perfectly.

The hook is partridge_hooks G3A/L Spoat bend in size 8. Wood duck or Mandarin are difficult to find, so I used mallard in color Summer Yellow.

Tonight was my first attempt ever at tying this pattern and it was a bit of a challenge. I started to get something resembling the real thing on the third try. I took a few liberties with profile and material selection. Up until now I had no idea that my stash is lacking a set of white duck quills!

'69、アメリカでは、あのFly Fisherman誌が発刊され、'72〜73、日本にはChandlerさんが来て、フライフィッシングを広めてくれました。
それが、ほぼこの国でのフライ第1波です。
そして僕がその波に🌊飲み込まれたのが76年。
これが第2波。
その頃からこの沼にハマって、抜け出せない人は、そんなに少なくないと思います。第2波に乗った(乗ってしまった😪)人でももう直ぐ50周年。
それにしてもその波の発生元のFly Fisherman誌発刊から2年後の71年(書いてるのは60年代中頃〜後半)にはもうこの"Selective Trout"を上梓させてるのは、今更だけど、物凄い事ですよ。あの時代にコレですもん。
コレは、もう殆ど聖書ですね。
No Hackledunもそうだけど、水中のハッキリとしてないものをこんな風にハッキリクッキリと文字として書き起こす。これは、とんでもない事ですよ。
ドライフライは、これからどう進化していくのか。
見届けてやります。
